Child CPR: How To Perform CPR on a Child

Did you know that around 1 Billion children younger than 18 experience violence?

A child can die because of abuse. This might result in brain damage or death itself. However, there are still ways to save a child, one of them being through performing CPR.

Are you familiar with performing CPR on a child? If you’re a parent and want to learn CPR, this guide is for you. Here, we’ll give you a step-by-step tutorial on how to perform child CPR. Keep on reading to get this essential information!

Assess a Child’s Breathing and Unresponsiveness

To perform CPR on a child, assess the child’s breathing and unresponsiveness. Check their responsiveness by tapping them gently and calling loudly. Look for signs of pulse, and place your ear close to the child’s mouth to listen and feel for breath.

Look for the chest to rise and fall and observe any signs of life in the child. If the child is unresponsive and not breathing or has a weakly pulsing heart, begin chest compressions. Make sure to learn more about performing CPR the right way.

Prepare to Perform CPR on a Child

It is crucial to ensure you are properly prepared to perform CPR on a child before starting. Firstly, ensure the child is lying on a firm, flat surface. Put on a pair of protective gloves and check the child’s mouth for any objects that could obstruct the airway.

Secondly, locate the child’s sternum or chest bone, the middle of their breastplate, and place the heel of one hand on top of the other on the center of the sternum. Compress the chest about 2 inches and do 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 per minute. Next, tilt the child’s head back slightly and seal your mouth around the child’s mouth, pinching the child’s nose shut.

Delivering two breaths per second and lasting 1-2 seconds each. Finally, alternate between 30 chest compressions and two breaths until emergency responders reach the scene or until the child can breathe on their own.

Position for CPR on an Infant Under 1 Year Old

To properly perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an infant under one year old, it is important to position the baby during resuscitation correctly. Place two fingers at the center of the baby’s chest and place the heel of one hand on top of the other. The chest should be compressed at least one-third of the infant’s depth.

Give two rescue breaths between each set of 30 compressions. When administering breaths, place the mouth over the infant’s mouth and nose and blow gently. Continue compressions and breaths until emergency medical personnel arrive or the baby starts to move.

Adjusted compressions, ventilations, and cycles should be used based on the infant’s size and age. When possible, use an automated external defibrillator to assist resuscitation further. Be sure to keep the infant in a safe environment until help arrives.

Perform A Child CPR The Right Way

To conclude, everyone must be trained in the basics of CPR. Knowing how to perform child CPR properly could potentially save their life. So get trained and be prepared for any emergency. Be a lifesaver!
