Ingredients

  • 3 medium ripe but firm bananas
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup optional, for topping

Instructions

  • Prepare the Bananas: Peel the bananas and slice them into evenly sized rounds, about half an inch thick. Keep the slices uniform so they cook evenly, and avoid using overly soft bananas.
  • Melt the Butter: Place a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and let it melt until bubbly. Spread the butter evenly across the bottom of the skillet.
  • Cook the Bananas: Arrange the banana slices in a single layer in the skillet. Cook for 2–3 minutes until the bottoms turn golden, then gently flip and cook for another 1–2 minutes.
  • Add Cinnamon and Brown Sugar: Sprinkle the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt over the bananas. Add the vanilla extract and gently turn the slices to coat them in the buttery mixture.
  • Caramelize and Serve: Continue cooking for another 1–2 minutes, until the bananas are glossy, golden, and lightly caramelized. Remove from the heat and serve warm, with optional maple syrup or vanilla ice cream.

Notes

  • Choose ripe but firm bananas so they hold their shape while cooking.
  • Cook over medium heat to prevent the butter and sugar from burning.
  • Avoid overcrowding the skillet; cook in batches if necessary.
  • Flip the banana slices gently to keep them intact.
  • Serve immediately for the best caramelized texture.
Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in a skillet over low heat or in the microwave in short intervals. Freezing is possible for up to 2 months, although the bananas will become softer after thawing.
Serving Suggestions: Serve over pancakes, waffles, French toast, oatmeal, or yogurt. For dessert, pair with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Allergen Note: This recipe contains dairy from butter. For a dairy-free version, substitute plant-based butter.
