Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • ½ cup plain yogurt
  • teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 4 tablespoons butter melted
  • 3 cloves fresh garlic finely minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro chopped (optional)

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast: Combine the warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast in a small bowl. Let stand for 5–10 minutes, until the mixture becomes foamy.
  • Make the Dough: Add the flour, salt, yogurt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5–7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Avoid adding too much flour.
  • Let the Dough Rise: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean towel. Let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes, or until noticeably puffy.
  • Divide the Dough: Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball.
  • Shape the Naan: Roll or stretch each dough ball into an oval or teardrop shape. Keep the dough slightly thicker in the center.
  • Heat the Skillet: Heat a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high to high heat. The pan should be very hot before adding the naan.
  • Cook the Naan: Place one naan onto the hot skillet. Cook until bubbles form and the underside develops golden-brown spots. Flip and cook the other side until lightly charred.
  • Make Garlic Butter: Mix the melted butter with minced garlic. Brush the mixture generously over each hot naan.
  • Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle with fresh chopped cilantro if desired. Serve immediately while warm and soft.

Notes

  • Use a very hot skillet to create the characteristic golden-brown spots and lightly charred edges.
  • Keep the dough soft and avoid adding excessive flour, which can make the naan tough.
  • For garlic naan, brush with fresh garlic butter immediately after cooking.
  • Keep cooked naan covered with a clean kitchen towel while preparing the remaining pieces.
  • For the best texture, serve the naan warm and fresh from the skillet.
