Ingredients

  • 2 large large yellow onions – Choose firm onions with large even layers.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour – Forms the base of the crispy coating.
  • ¼ cup cornstarch – Helps create a lighter crunchier texture.
  • 1 tsp baking powder – Gives the coating a slightly lighter texture.
  • 1 tsp salt – Enhances the overall flavor.
  • ½ tsp black pepper – Adds mild peppery flavor.
  • 1 tsp paprika – Adds warm color and subtle smoky flavor.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder – Adds savory depth.
  • 1 tsp onion powder – Boosts the classic onion flavor.
  • 1 large egg – Helps bind the batter together.
  • 1 cup buttermilk – Adds moisture and a subtle tangy flavor.
  • 4 cups vegetable oil – For deep frying the onion rings.

Instructions

  • Peel the onions and slice them into thick, even rounds. Separate the slices carefully into individual rings.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and buttermilk until well combined.
  • Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, whisking until you have a smooth, thick batter.
  • Dip each onion ring into the batter, making sure it is completely coated. Allow excess batter to drip back into the bowl.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a deep, heavy-bottomed pot to approximately 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil in small batches. Avoid overcrowding the pot.
  • Fry for about 2–3 minutes per side, or until the onion rings are crisp and golden brown.
  • Using tongs, carefully transfer the cooked onion rings to a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  • Serve immediately while hot and crispy with ketchup, ranch dressing, barbecue sauce, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For the crispiest onion rings, maintain the frying oil around 350°F (175°C) and fry in small batches. Do not overcrowd the pot, as this can lower the oil temperature and make the onion rings greasy.
For best texture, serve the onion rings immediately after frying. An air fryer or oven can be used to reheat leftovers and restore some of their crispness.
