Total Time 45 minutes mins
- 1 cup – Granulated sugar
- ½ cup – Unsalted butter room temperature
- 2 – Large eggs
- 1½ tsp – Pure vanilla extract
- 1½ cups – All-purpose flour
- 1¾ tsp – Baking powder
- ¼ tsp – Salt
- ½ cup – Whole milk
Gather all ingredients. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square cake pan.2. Beat butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add eggs one at a time, mixing briefly after each. Mix in vanilla for about 15 seconds.3. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl. With mixer on low, alternate adding flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture in 3 batches, starting and ending with flour. Mix just until combined.4. Spread batter evenly into the prepared pan.5. Bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.6. Cool in pan on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Invert onto rack, remove pan, and cool completely before frosting.
- Make sure butter, eggs, and milk are all at room temperature before starting for the best texture.
- Do not overmix once the flour is added — mix just until the batter comes together.
- Cake must be completely cool before frosting to avoid melting.
- Store covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
