Total Time 45 minutes mins
- 1 lb lean ground beef the leaner the better, less grease to drain
- ½ cup onion, chopped A yellow or white onion works well
- ½ cup green bell pepper, chopped optional, can omit if preferred
- ¾ cup ketchup adjust to taste
- 2 tbsp brown sugar adjust to taste
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard adjust to taste
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- to taste salt and black pepper
- 4 hamburger buns, split toasted, if you like
Brown the beef. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until it starts to render some fat, about 3 to 4 minutes.2. Soften the vegetables. Stir in the chopped onion and bell pepper. Continue cooking until the vegetables soften and the beef is fully cooked through, 3 to 5 more minutes.3. Build the sauce. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.4. Serve. Spoon the meat mixture evenly onto the hamburger buns and serve hot.
Leftovers keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months. Reheat gently in a skillet over low heat with a splash of water if the sauce has thickened.
