Puppy chow, also known as Muddy Buddies, is a classic no-bake snack that’s impossible to resist. It’s made with crispy rice or corn cereal (such as Chex), coated in a rich mixture of melted chocolate, peanut butter, and butter, then generously tossed in powdered sugar for the perfect sweet finish.

Puppy Chow Recipe

Puppy Chow (Muddy Buddies) has always been one of my favorite sweet treats. And no, I’m definitely not talking about dog food! This homemade snack mix is made with crispy cereal coated in rich chocolate and creamy peanut butter, then finished with a generous dusting of powdered sugar. It’s crunchy, sweet, completely irresistible, and tastes like a dessert version of Chex Mix. One handful is never enough!

This sweet and salty snack is perfect for parties, movie nights, game days, or whenever you’re craving something fun. It also makes a thoughtful homemade gift during the holidays—just package it in a cute jar or festive bag and share it with family and friends. It’s an easy recipe that’s always a crowd-pleaser and brings back so many nostalgic memories!

Puppy Chow Ingredients & Substitutions

Puppy Chow Recipe

One of the best things about puppy chow is that it’s made with simple pantry staples you probably already have on hand!

  • Chex Cereal – Rice Chex is the classic choice and my personal favorite because it stays nice and crispy. Corn Chex works just as well, and Crispix is another popular option if that’s what you have. The only difference is that the pieces have a slightly different shape.
  • Chocolate Chips – I like using semi-sweet chocolate chips because they add just the right amount of sweetness without being overpowering. If you have a sweet tooth, milk chocolate chips are a delicious alternative. Dark chocolate chips also work well if you prefer a richer chocolate flavor.
  • Peanut Butter – Creamy peanut butter, such as JIF or Skippy, gives the smoothest coating and the best texture. I recommend skipping crunchy peanut butter for this recipe. Need a peanut-free option? Cashew butter, almond butter, or sunflower seed butter (like SunButter) are all great substitutes.
  • Butter – Salted butter adds a subtle salty contrast that balances the sweetness perfectly. If you’re using unsalted butter, you can stir in a small pinch of salt if you’d like.
  • Vanilla Extract – Just a splash of vanilla adds extra warmth and enhances all of the flavors.
  • Powdered Sugar – Also called confectioners’ sugar, this is what gives puppy chow its signature sweet coating and classic snowy appearance.

How to Make Puppy Chow

Here’s how to make a big batch of puppy chow in just a few simple steps:

Step 1: Prepare the chocolate and peanut butter mixture. In a medium microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, butter, and peanut butter. Microwave on high for 1 minute, stir well, then continue heating in short intervals, stirring after each, until the mixture is completely smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract at the end.

Step 2: Place the Chex cereal in a large bowl. You’ll need six cups of Rice Chex. While many recipes suggest using nine cups, I learned from a friend that six cups is the perfect amount. It gives every bite a richer chocolate peanut butter coating, and I’ve never gone back!

Step 3: Pour the chocolate peanut butter mixture over the cereal. Gently fold everything together with a spatula or large spoon, being careful not to crush the cereal. Keeping the pieces whole makes them perfect for snacking. Once the cereal is evenly coated, transfer it to a large Ziploc bag.

Step 4: Add the powdered sugar. Use 1½ to 2 cups of confectioners’ sugar, depending on how heavily coated you want your puppy chow. Seal the bag tightly, then give it a good shake until every piece is evenly covered. This is the fun part, and kids always enjoy helping!

Step 5: Let it cool. Spread the puppy chow onto a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper. Leave it at room temperature until the chocolate has fully set, about 2 hours. If you’re short on time, chill it in the refrigerator or freezer for about 30 minutes instead.

How to Store Puppy Chow

Storing on the Counter: Keep homemade puppy chow in an airtight container at room temperature, and it will stay fresh for up to 1 week.

Storing in the Refrigerator: Transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks to keep it fresh.

Freezing: This is my favorite way to store puppy chow. It tastes incredibly delicious straight from the freezer! Place it in a freezer-safe bag or airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months. Enjoy it frozen whenever you’re craving a sweet treat!
